Key Ingredients: Behentrimonium Methosulfate (modified rapeseed oil), Organic Mango Butter, Cocoa Butter, Shea Butter, Kokum Butter Cety Alcohol, Cetearyl Alcohol
Before we go one inch further, let’s talk about that first ingredient Behentrimonium Methosulfate that unpronounceable mouthful, WHAT IS IT? I am not going to sugar coat it by calling it by all it’s trade names like Incroquat or “vegetable sourced detangler” (Seriously, really?) all the other cute BS names. It’s an emulsifer made from modified rapeseed oil. It is NOT despite the name a sulfate. Sulfates are foaming agents found in shampoos and soap, this is NOT a foaming agent. It’s an incongruity kind of like not all alcohols are alcohol. I was hesitant to even use such an ingredient, but just as you can’t make an omelet without breaking a few eggs, make soap (real soap) without lye you can’t make a solid conditioner bar (one that won’t leave you like an oil slick) without Behentrimonium Methosulfate aka BTMS.
So, what does it do?
It lends excellent conditioning, detangling and wet-combing properties to conditioners plus it’s mild and gentle for ultra-sensitive skin. Rather than coating your hair it actually penetrates the hair shaft leaving your hair feeling thick and soft, but won’t leave behind residue that leads to unwanted buildup. That’s it, that’s what it does.
Grace, you used alcohol in a product?! WHAT!! I know, I know….please read on for explanation. During the beginning of my natural hair journey I found alcohol in almost every product and it terrified me!! After learning more about the difference in alcohol it was hard to find products that worked for me and contained the good alcohols, so I decided to make my own.
Cetyl & Cetearyl Alcohol- Cetyl & Cetearyl alcohol are known as a fatty alcohols. Some alcohols can be very drying to our delicate curls, and others not so much. For instance, isopropyl alcohol is drying and harsh to our natural hair. This type of alcohol is usually found in hair sprays and gel and it dries faster on your on hair. Constant use of this ingredient can leave your hair very dry, frizzy, and dull. On the other hand, some alcohols help with moisture and manageability of our hair. Cetearyl alcohol and Cetyl alcohol are two of the most common fatty alcohols in hair products. These particular alcohols are emollients and they are known to soften your skin and hair. They also provide slip to our conditioner Bar which allows it to better detangle hair.
D-panthenol ~ Better known as Pro Vitamin b5, Panthenol is present in all living cells, which makes it the perfect ingredient in a conditioning bar. When it’s left on the hair for 5 minutes or more, it swells the hair shaft creating an extremely hydrating environment, keeping the hair wonderfully moisturized for long periods of time helping to give the hair more body.
Silk Protein- Hydrolyzed silk protein has the ability to replenish the hair with cysteine, which is one of the 4 amino acids needed to produce keratin. Additionally, as a result of hydrolysis, hydrolyzed silk protein has a low molecular weight, which means it has a greater ability to infiltrate the hair strands. As it penetrates the hair, it improves its elasticity against breakage while also forming a protective barrier on the hair. This barrier or shield serves as a means to improve shine while also preventing the hair against moisture loss.
As always this product is sulfate free, paraben free and eco-friendly.
